Originally from the Dominican Republic, Alberto Carrasco runs a very busy and friendly barber shop in the heart of Olney. Many of his customers are long time members of the community and friends who love to talk baseball, far and away the most popular sport in their home country and in the shop. They often come in with other family members, including children, for a quick cut and conversation.
At its North 5th Street location for ten years, Alberto says that the Olney community is like family, with many repeat customers stopping in every few weeks or more frequently, depending on their hair style.
Open seven days a week, from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and with a number of barbers available to handle their own clients and walk-ins, the shop is busy. Add the friends and visitors just stopping by to catch up and the shop feels more like a bustling social club.
Most customers bring in a photo of a hairstyle they are interested in, or they request the latest look of their favorite baseball player or celebrity. A “low fade” style is trending right now and haircut typically start at about $15, a true bargain for such expertise.
