Holla Sporting Goods
5625 North 5th Street
Philadelphia, PA 19120
Mike Crawford is the owner of Holla Sporting Goods at 5625 N. 5th Street, specializing in sports uniforms and selling all kinds of sporting goods. The business is now adapting to the pandemic by selling masks. Mike began thinking about selling uniforms in 2009, and started building his business out of his basement. He continued to grow his business while simultaneously working for the city for the next 7 years, when a manufacturing opportunity took him overseas in 2016 and the business took a big step forward. After getting a haircut on 5th street, he saw the available storefront; with the right timing and location, it all aligned. He knew it was time to sign a lease, and officially registered to open Holla Sporting Goods on 5th Street in October 2019.
Holla Sporting Goods had its grand opening celebration on Saturday, August 8th, 2021. The opening had a lively atmosphere, and included giveaways, free food, activities for kids, and music. The original trailer that he started his business with also made an appearance on 5th street.
Mike grew up in Olney and attended Olney Elementary School – 5th Street is home to him. He loves Olney because there are people from so many different nationalities and cultures from every walk of life. Mike wanted to bring something different to 5th street that wasn’t a service business. He thought it was a win-win that everyone plays and loves sports, allowing him to fill in this gap with his business, while also bridging together Olney’s diverse communities.
For those in the neighborhood who want to open their own business, he recommends having patience. Don’t bite off too much but also be aggressive. Don’t have a plan B because then you’ll give yourself the option to fail. Sometimes things don’t work out. Keep pushing and striving.
